Almost two dozen businesses around Albuquerque have applied for a grant program the city launched two weeks ago aimed at helping small businesses that have been vandalized.

The Albuquerque Police Department and the city Economic Development Department’s Small Business Office on Sept. 3 initiated a $200,000 “Window to Opportunity” grant to help offset the costs for small businesses to repair or replace broken or vandalized windows. 

According to the Economic Development Department (EDD), those 20 businesses consist of two restaurants, nine retail businesses, five offices, one daycare, one co-working space, one manufacturing business and one non-profit organization. 

Businesses will be reimbursed up to 80% of the total cost of window replacement or repair and $38,051 has been held for the applicants. Payments for the accepted applicants will be disbursed within the next few weeks, according to the EDD.

  1. I appreciate the businesses getting help on the vandalism. As street-facing buildings, I suspect they take the brunt of the damage vandals incur. Additionally, I wish there was a path for non-profits and churches to apply for similar grants. They also work at tight margins and suffer the added indignity of vandals with misplaced (messed up) idealisms. They hurt who deface others purely trying to do good in the world because they disagree with one or another aspect of their cause or because they are often undefended and defenseless.
