The city’s Parks and Recreation Department offered free swim lessons at the West Mesa Aquatic Center on Thursday, as part of the “World’s Largest Swimming Lesson.”
The department offered lessons in floating for children ages three to five, floating and gliding for children ages six to 14, introduction to freestyle swimming ages six to 14 and introduction to swimming for anyone over 15 years of age. As many as 400 could get lessons.
“Swim lessons save lives,” said Dave Simon, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department.
According to a news release, studies have shown that swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning among the youngest children by up to 88%. However, more than half of Americans can’t swim or don’t have basic swimming skills.
