The City of Albuquerque accepted a $192,000 rebate check Friday for the electric city buses it has rolled out over the past five years.

“We want to lead by example, and there are very few better examples than our Transit Department embracing EV technology,” Mayor Tim Keller said in a written statement.

The check, which totals $192,000, was issued by the Public Service Co. of New Mexico (PNM) through a program that financially supports and incentivizes New Mexico’s transition to clean energy, according to a press release.

The City first brought electric buses to ABQ RIDE routes in 2019. In July, it added five electric vans to ABQ RIDE’s fleet.

The Transformation Electrification Program has led to the installation of more than 600 EV chargers in the area, according to a press release. PNM is on track to reach its goal of being 100% carbon-free by 2040.
