Bragging rights often come with discovering a great new artist.
Albuquerque Public Schools elementary school students will be showcasing at an art exhibit that opens Monday. Art is Elementary includes about 1,500 works from students in more than 90 schools across the district, said the show’s coordinator Cinnamon Gentry.
The work will include drawings, paintings and collages, and could include sculptures, ceramic pieces and even some weavings.
Gentry said the art teacher from each campus will select 12 to 15 of the best works from the school. They will be installed at the Berna Facio Professional Development Complex over the weekend and unveiled during the show, which runs through March 14.
An opening reception is set for 4 p.m. Monday. Gentry said about 2,200 people attended last year’s reception, with hundreds visiting the exhibit at later times.
She said attention is good for the young artists.
“I think it’s an amazing thing because the kids get to see that their art is valued, and their creativity is seen and recognized,” Gentry said. “It gives them a sense of what it means to be actual artists.”
The Berna Facio Professional Development Complex is at 3315 Louisiana Blvd. NE. Exhibit hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 24, March 2, and March 9.
Food trucks will be on hand during the reception.
