Bernalillo County officials and community members are planting the seeds to create an “urban agriculture project” in the city’s International District.
Construction is expected to begin soon and be completed by March.
The project was launched with a news conference Tuesday evening following a community meeting. A vacant lot on Wyoming Boulevard near Copper Avenue NE will feature stormwater infrastructure, a shaded outdoor classroom, demonstration gardens, security fencing, landscaping, irrigation and raised planting beds, according to a news release.
Bernalillo County Commissioners funded the project with $400,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act, as well as capital outlay and mill levy funds.
Commissioner Adriann Barboa, who represents the area, said it is the most densely populated area of the county.
“This project provides an opportunity for residents to access urban agriculture and enjoy the outdoors,” Barboa said. “Access to open space and gardening has been shown to improve quality of life, as well as public health and safety. I’m thrilled to be able to bring such an important program to the community here.”
