Albuquerque Public Schools on Saturday is hosting a spotlight on African American culture and history.

The district’s 4th Annual African American Youth Empowerment Summit is geared toward students of Black or African American heritage, but APS says all high school students are welcome for a day of learning, networking and celebrating.

According to a district news release, goals for the event include giving participants a deeper understanding and appreciation of African American heritage as well as fostering a sense of cultural pride and identity.

Students will also be able to learn new leadership skills, build community understanding and networks, and connect with peers who share similar personal and community goals and aspirations, APS officials say.

“One of the district’s four goals is to expand opportunities for students to develop, nurture, and strengthen their skills, mindsets, and habits to ensure success in life,” the release states. “Social awareness plays a critical role in preparing students for success. The African American Youth Empowerment Summit can be a transformative experience, providing students with the tools, knowledge and inspiration to navigate challenges and excel in all areas of their lives.”

Several students will be conducting presentations of their own design.

The event, hosted by the APS Coordinated School Health Department, is from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at College and Career High School, 940 University Blvd SE.
