It’s been a while since we’ve had much news on the Albuquerque Police Department’s DWI unit — which is being investigated both federally and internally for corruption allegations — but this evening we learned that two more officers have left the department. One, a commander in the Internal Affairs Division, was fired.

APD officer connected to DWI scandal fired, another resigns
By Elise Kaplan
The highest ranking cop under an internal investigation regarding allegations of corruption in the Albuquerque Police Department’s DWI unit has been terminated and another officer resigned this week. Cmdr. Mark Landavazo, with the Internal Affairs Division, had been on administrative leave and under investigation since Feb. 13. He had been with APD since 2007 and was […]
We need your help
This weekend is tax-free weekend and although that is usually geared towards back to school shoppers, it is also when scrappy reporters like us stock up on the supplies we need to bring you all these stories you can’t get anywhere else.
Remember Elise Kaplan’s interview with the man whose DWI arrest led to the FBI tip into APD’s DWI unit? The reporter’s notebooks purchased with reader donations kept all those notes in order to be sure we got the story right.
Tierna Unruh-Enos’ time pouring through city time card records burned through lots of paper and printer ink but it was worth it to uncover a pattern of special sick leave payouts given to the city’s top administrators.
Roberto Rosales’ photos on Albuquerque’s lowrider culture, homeless camps and crime scenes take lots of camera batteries and some fancy computers to bring those stories to life.
Why does that matter? Because when you run a small newsroom relying on reader donations every dollar counts. This weekend your donation dollars go a little farther when we shop tax free and stock up on office supplies, worn out computers and the tools and toys it takes to cover the news better than anyone else.
Here’s how you can help: Donate $50 to buy a pack of 20 reporters notebooks for our team. Donate $100 to buy printer ink for a week to power public records reviews. Donate $250 for $500 to help us upgrade a worn out laptop used by our editor (OMG it is SOOO slow).
