Investigators say each time the West Mesa serial killer case hits the news or is the topic of a podcast or TV show, new tips come in. The bodies of 11 women and teenagers were found in 2009, buried in the then-vacant lot on Albuquerque’s Westside.

So after we learned a movie had been released about the investigation — loosely based on real events and starring Mel Gibson and the rapper known as 50 Cent — reporter Rodd Cayton reached out to the Albuquerque Police Department to find out:

  • What have the victims’ families told investigators about how they feel about the movie?
  • How does a work of fiction like this impact the investigation?
  • Has Chief Harold Medina seen the movie and what does he think?

We were following the news from an hour north on the special session — until it abruptly ended without legislators considering any of the governor’s public safety bills. We have stories from our media partners who were camping out in the Roundhouse.

We are also glued to reading about the Republican National Convention — where Donald Trump is expected to take the stage tonight — and the White House — where a growing number of Democrats are calling on President Joe Biden to reconsider his run.

When you need help — whether for emergency service or when it is time to upgrade from your old swamp cooler to high-efficiency A/C — be sure you are on the lookout for deals that are too good to be true. They usually are. Scammers use hot weather to pitch unnecessary service or overpriced equipment on people desperate to beat the heat. Always check for a State License Number, see customer reviews in reputable sites like HomeAdvisor by Angi or Google Reviews that screen businesses and verify customer reviews, and never pay someone who insists on cash-only payment. Don’t let a scammer take advantage of you when you need help the most. This sponsored message is a reminder is from Kidzz Mechanical, a NM-licensed local firm with more than 300 5-Star service reviews.
