Today is Monday, June 24, 2024.

Last week, all eyes in city hall were glued to the city council as councilors plowed through a mountain of budget and policy decisions before their summer break (ICYMI: Drive-thrus, tribal consultation and other changes to the city’s zoning code coming to a neighborhood near you).

This week, city policy watchers are turning their eyes to Washington, D.C.

That’s because the U.S. Supreme Court is widely expected to decide a case out of Oregon on whether “laws regulating camping on public property constitute ‘cruel and unusual punishment’ prohibited by the Eighth Amendment?”

The City of Albuquerque has even weighed in (alongside many other cities) with the court saying, in part, “As a practical matter, these decisions compel local
governments to choose between providing shelter or surrendering public lands to encampments that harm local communities.”

Looking ahead to that decision and how the city has been navigating and changing its approach to homelessness and policing public spaces, we sat in on a unique public hearing this past weekend and look back at some of our previous reporting on how the city’s homeless solutions work (and don’t).

Thank you to our sponsors whose support provides nonprofit journalism we can all use.
