A Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) corrections officer found herself behind bars after she was accused of having a relationship with an inmate.

According to a Bernalillo County news release, MDC officials found out about the allegations Tuesday and reported them to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).

The officer, Chevonne Culbreath — a probationary employee who was hired on Oct. 23, 2023 — was also reported for allegedly attempting to bring an illegal substance into the jail. According to the MDC news release, Culbreath was removed from her post and interviewed at BCSO headquarters before returning to the MDC for booking.

MDC said Culbreath was terminated and she has been charged with second-degree criminal sexual penetration and an attempt to commit a felony. Her case is being transferred to state district court.

Kai Smith, the MDC Warden, said in the release that leadership at the jail is “deeply disappointed by the alleged actions” and is “committed to ensuring that corrupt officers are swiftly identified and removed from our ranks.”

  1. How can they put women in that position watching over men with criminal records that is very unsafe
    and dangerous

    1. Been with the state police (SW US) for over 20yrs.

To reply to your very sexist remark.

You do know that there have been female correctional officers for decades, right? Not just in the US but Asia, Europe and many other parts of the world, have had females working in jails and prisons for decades as well. Not to mention there have been female city, state and federal law enforcement officers, troopers and agents for generations. It’s all about training and screening. This lady was still in her probationary time frame and as seen, she was NOT cut out for such work and thankfully was caught or weeded out as it’s no secret that corrections in every state have some bad reputations. No need for another corrupt officer in the jail.

But it does NOT matter if they are female or male.
